El Chorro is a world class climbing destination with over 2000 routes in walking distance and many more a short drive away.

The rock here is amazingly varied. It provides everything from easy angled slabs to steep overhanging tufas, and ranging from short single pitches to 300m multi-pitch adventures. Whatever grade you climb or style you prefer, you are guaranteed to find many routes you will love. Climbing season in El Chorro is nearly all year round.

December to March is the busiest time here for climbers, with the many south facing walls making the best of the winter sun, but Spring and Autumn can provide the nicest conditions, with warmer weather and long hours of sunlight. It is only the very hottest months of July and August that can make climbing difficult, but even then a little local knowledge can keep you in the shade and enjoying your day. We would advise hiring a car during the warmer months as the best of the shady crags are a short drive away, but we can also try to introduce you to others who are driving or provide a taxi service. A huge quantity of world class climbs, combined with a pleasant winter climate and easy access has kept it high on the list of the winter-sun venues in Europe for the last two decades.

Guide Book

The development of the cliffs in and around El Chorro village has continued at an impressive rate since the publication of the last Rockfax guide to the area in 2014. This coupled with the expansion of the outlying areas, and the development of new cliffs, has kept the area well furnished with new routes throughout the grade range and offers both the first-timer and the seasoned El Chorro visitor something new to go at.

The latest Rockfax guidebook to El Chorro is solely dedicated to El Chorro and its surrounding crags. The guidebook is illustrated with plenty of action photographs and is presented in the latest Rockfax style with over 2000 routes illustrated on full-colour photo-topos to all of the crags. Comprehensive information on approaches, accommodation, eating and drinking, transportation and other activities, so important to the easy planning and enjoyment of a visit, is also included.

Local Bolting

Developing and re-equipping of routes in the area is funded by local climbers, local businesses and the Federación Andaluza de Montañismo. This is an expensive and time consuming activity. In conjunction with the Olive Branch, Rockfax is supporting a bolt fund which will enable climbers to contribute to the bolting effort. The money from the fund will go to the Federación Andaluza de Montañismo. If you want to directly contribute to the fund please click Paypal link below. Some of the proceeds of sales of the Rockfax guidebook will also go towards supporting this fund.

Local knowledge

Most of the staff at the Olive Branch are climbers, and can give you all the information you need on the many new developments in the area, with single and multi-pitch routes on fresh rock from F4 to F9a, some of which are only 5 minutes walk away from our accommodation.
